Vivian Maier

A riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma” - Churchill’s famous quote about the vast land of Tsars and commissars that lay to the east. A person who fit the stereotypical European sensibilities of an independent liberated woman, accent and all, yet born in New York City.

Vivian Maier, a nanny who wowed the world with her photography, and recorded some of the most interesting aspects of Urban America in the second half of the twentieth century.
Yet whose work didn’t come to light until 2007 when it was discovered by local thrift auction house on Chicago’s Northwest Side.
A large amount of her work is currently being archived and catalogued so people can enjoy it. John Maloof is at the core of this project after reconstructing most of the archive.
I like all of these self-portraits because of the use of reflection she has used. It gives the photos a good sense of depth rather than just sticking the camera in front of her, they are more interesting to look at.  Also I like the fact that in every photo she shows the equipment she has used to take it, I feel this really brings the audience into the photo.
