Gordan Ayres Photography

Gordon Ayres is a vintage style photographer who has been photographing the 30's-50's retro scene for over 20 years. He takes photographs of people, bands, dancers, and fans who have kept this particular era of fashion alive. He bases his images around the classic Hollywood period and finds his inspiration in glamour photographs from the time and the grundgy style of old fashioned newspapers; using vintage lens and studio lamps to create the exact feel and look of the era he is trying to recreate.

His collection called Film Noir is a set of shots that use the lighting, clothing and props to make them look like a dark film set or night-club photographs around the 50's. They look like they are set around American gangster films of the era.

Contrasting that, his collection called Hollywood Glamour, even though they are still in black and white, have a much happier and less sinister feel about them. The lighting is a lot brighter and the clothing used in the images aren't as dark, even down to the people in the images who look a lot happier.

Out of these two collections I prefer the Hollywood Glamour one because I think the photos are a lot more elegant resulting in them being easier on the eye. However I do like the use of shadowing and the darker effect on the Film Noir collection as that's usually the technique I apply to my photos. I also think that the Film Noir collection is more effective in showing the audience what the photos are based on; the Hollywood Glamour collection just look like glamorous photos, I wouldn't say they have anything to do with Hollywood, whereas the Film Noir collection I would say straight away they were based around old-fashioned films.
