For this project I was asked to shoot and edit a self portrait, but in a different individual way. I had a range of techniques at my disposal that made it completely different to just sticking a camera in front of a mirror. The techniques I had to choose from were pin-hole photography, photograms, medium format or large format. I chose to do a photogram, as this particular technique was completely new to me and I wanted to learn it. A photogram is an image made without a camera by placing objects directly onto the surface of a light-sensitive material such as photographic paper and then exposing it to light. The result is a negative photo where the areas of the paper that received no light turn white, those exposed through transparent or semi-transparent objects appears grey and the rest appears black. I liked using this technique because it was simple yet effective and felt I could do more, and if not better, post-production to it adding more of myself to the image.
On the day of taking my self-portrait I only had the objects that were in my bag, and I had to really think about what I could use to represent me. I found my head phones, a pen, my glasses, my keys and my lighter. I decided to use my head phones because I can not go anywhere without listening to music, it helps me concentrate and makes life interesting. Seeing my lighter gave me the idea to roll a cigarette and use that too, because anyone that knows me knows I smoke a lot. Also I thought all of these items would look interesting because parts of them are semi-transparent so it would add more depth to the photo. I then experimented with using myself, that is how I came up with the idea of using the side of my face, I thought the shape would look nice and it would also mean I was in the picture just not every part of me.
When editing the photo I had to again think about what could represent me and what I was passionate about. I took my favourite film, Alice in Wonderland, and found some art work that had been created after the film was brought out, and also used picture of pansies to show the talking flowers in film. I chose Alice in Wonderland because I have read the books and I find the hole concept of them very interesting and a little bit crazy, which represents me perfectly!
The other thing I thought I could use was "pop-art" and animation. I used "pop-art" because I love Andy Warhols work and I like that fact that it is a different from other artwork you see. I used animation because it is my favourite technique used in film and everyone thinks I look a bit like an animation character. I love working in animation and I think it is very effective and stands out more than anything.
Overall my picture is a perfect representation of me because it is bright, colourful, different and stands out from a crowd.
After conducting research on existing photographers that do a lot of self-portraits, I found a photographer called Mariell Amelie. I took a particular liking to her style as it has a vintage feel to it but still being very elegant and almost mesmerizing. I would have liked to do a self-portrait based on her style but I did not have the time and had taken my photo by the time I had found her.
